Impressive Results At Goffs December NH Sale

A brilliant year for Goffs concluded today with a vibrant December National Hunt Foal Sale that recorded increases in turnover (+33%), average (+7%), median (+12%) and an improved clearance rate of 74%.

Kevin Ross secured a number of top class foals including the sales topper when going to €39,000 for a son of Beneficial from Shanaville Stables (Lot 123), as well as the own brother to Grand National winner Ballabriggs and winner of yesterday’s ITBA NH Foal Show colt class (Lot 43) from Ballincurrig House Stud who sold for €30,000.  Ross also purchased the winner of yesterday’s filly class when securing Lewinstown Farm’s Yeats filly (Lot 100) for €25,000.

Rathmore Stud accounted for the second highest lot of the sale when going to €35,000 for Tinnakill House’s Jeremy colt (Lot 52) with other notable purchases including a son of Gold Well from Jamestown Consignment (Lot 28) and a colt by Robin Des Champs consigned by Ethel Browne (Lot 72) who both made €29,000.

Two extremely well related foals that also proved popular were Grange Stud’s Flemensfirth colt out of a sister to Hurricane Fly (Lot 27) who sold to Gerry Hogan for €30,000, while Grange Hill Stud’s Scorpion colt out of a sister to multiple Grade 1 winner Oscar Whisky (Lot 106) also fetched €30,000 when knocked down to Abbeylands Stud.

Goffs Chief Executive Henry Beeby commented:

"The Goffs December NH Sale has enjoyed phenomenal growth since we re-launched our NH sales programme two years ago and we are pleased to have built on that progress again today.

There is no doubt that this is now viewed as a serious market for NH foals and the lively competition from start to finish of what was a huge day has clearly demonstrated that our “serious about National Hunt” message resonates with vendors and purchasers alike.

We have witnessed sustained demand all day especially for those foals with the pedigrees and conformation to suggest they will be real National Hunt prospects. That sentiment is graphically illustrated by the growth in the number of foals to realise €10,000 and above which leapt by 55% and those making over €20,000 which more than doubled.  That the clearance rate and average have both advanced again despite it being a bigger catalogue is another big step forward and we will look to build on these advances still further next year with the goal being a two day sale of real quality.

We are most grateful to the increasing numbers of Irish NH breeders who have entrusted their stock to us and pleased that so many of them have been well rewarded whilst it has been gratifying to welcome such a large number of NH buyers to Kildare Paddocks for today’s sale".
