Turnover And Median Rise At Open Yearling & HIT Sale

Goffs welcomed a large group of international buyers to the Open Yearling and Horses In Training Sale today where healthy demand throughout led to notable increases in turnover and median on last year.

Topping the yearling trade was a Sir Prancealot brother to Group 3 winner Extortionist from Weir View Stud (Lot 55) who sold to Bobby O’Ryan for €80,000.  Other highlights included two yearlings that each fetched €62,000 – a son of Kodiac from Grennanstown Stud sold to Tally Ho Stud (Lot 88) while BBA Ireland secured a son of Raven’s Pass from Lumville Farm (Lot 129).  The Horses In Training section of the sale was topped by the two year old Kodiac filly Kotonic consigned by Michael O’Callaghan and sold to BBA Ireland for €54,000.

At the conclusion of the Open Yearling and HIT Sale, Goffs Chief Executive Henry Beeby said:

“Another international group of buyers has descended on Goffs for today’s Open Yearling and HIT Sale leading to a vibrant trade from dawn to dusk for both categories on offer.

The Open Yearling Sale has again made significant advances following major growth last year and there were several yearlings that definitely benefitted from the extra time this later date afforded them as they had matured and stood out which resulted in a premium price in the ring. An improved clearance rate and double digit rise in the median are the key stats and point to a marketplace of real credence for these commercially bred yearlings.

The HIT section continues to punch above its weight and we would only repeat our plea to Irish owners and trainers to entrust this category to us as we will deliver. We lacked a star today but still maintain there really is no need to travel to sell horses in training as every year we bring the buyers to Goffs and exceed so many vendors’ expectations but we can only get the prices if we have the horses.

The Goffs team and our partners at Irish Thoroughbred Marketing are dying to do more in this sector of the market and will continue in our endeavours to grow the catalogue in quality and quantity but it should be of some note that we have welcomed buyers from around the globe. Indeed, we have sold significant numbers to Azerbaijan, China, Czechoslovakia, Dubai, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Japan, Kuwait, Slovakia and Russia today as well as the usual tranche to the UK and to stay in Ireland. It is our hope that this will be borne in mind when entry decisions are taken 11 months from now and you can be sure we will remind the decision makers at the appropriate time.

Overall we are pleased to have made more progress this year and especially want to thank the ITM team for their input and proactivity. Together with the Goffs Marketing team they make a formidable group and ensure a visit to Goffs results in good business and a most enjoyable experience.
